WHO’LL GET THE MERCURY NOD?

The Mercury Prize shortlist will be revealed tomorrow at 5.30pm. Whether you’re a fan of awards ceremonies or not, events like this are usually (usually!) a decent barometer of the year’s mainstream music releases to date (in this case, from September 11th 2012 – September 9th 2013). There’ll undoubtedly be fist-shaking and foot-stomping at the omissions come 5.35pm, but here’s who I think could be nominated…. in many cases, not should, I might add.

Is one of these acts destined to be asked ‘So, how much of an impact did your Mercury Prize win really have on you?’ by every music journalist they speak to for the duration of their careers?

Arctic Monkeys – ‘AM’

AlunaGeorge – ‘Body Music’

Bastille – ‘Bad Blood’

Bat for Lashes – ‘The Haunted Man’

David Bowie – ‘The Next Day’

Disclosure – ‘Settle’

Foals – ‘Holy Fire’

Laura Mvula – ‘Sing to the Moon’

Laura Marling – ‘Once I Was an Eagle’

Rudimental – ‘Home’

These New Puritans – ‘Field of Reeds’

Could Little Green Cars or Villagers be Ireland’s representation this year? I would love to see them on the list because they both made tremendous albums – but I think LGC are still gathering momentum in the UK as their album was only released there last month, and it seems like Villagers’ debut made a bigger impact. But you never know… and could My Bloody Valentine slip in with ‘mbv’? Stranger things have happened.

I’d also love to see Johnny Marr’s ‘The Messenger’ on there, but I’ll be surprised if it makes the cut.

[UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 12TH]

Well, I predicted seven of the twelve nominees, and was happily wrong about Villagers! My money is now on Bowie. I don’t think it’s the best album on there by a long shot, but I reckon his status and the fact that it’s his first album in a decade will make it a happy medium for the judging panel. Otherwise, I think Laura Marling may sneak in. I think Villagers also have a fighting chance.

The nominees are:

Arctic Monkeys – ‘AM’

David Bowie – ‘The Next Day

Disclosure – ‘Settle’

Foals – ‘Holy Fire’

Jake Bugg – ‘Jake Bugg’

James Blake – ‘Overgrown’

Jon Hopkins – ‘Immunity’

Laura Marling – ‘Once I Was an Eagle’

Laura Mvula – ‘Sing to the Moon’

Rudimental – ‘Home’

Savages – ‘Silence Yourself’

Villagers – ‘{Awayland}’
