DUBLIN’S GOT THE R.A.G.E.

I was walking down Fade Street the other day in the hope that I’d bump into one of the characters from the show and I was flabbergasted to find that the shop that used to be Road Records has now re-opened as The R.A.G.E. (Record, Art, Game Emporium). Inside, the layout is exactly the same as Road’s, except as well as vinyl, they now sell second-hand games for the Gameboy, Sega Mega Drive, SNES and lots of other retro stuff. Apparently it’s been open about a month, according to the nice man behind the counter.

More interestingly, however, was the racket coming from downstairs. There was free music on offer, and a crowd of about thirty had squashed in to watch an open mic/freestyle rap/reggae/hip-hop performance with live musicians having a jam, and two guys behind a set of decks. There were two (non-Irish) guys that were actually very good, and a third (very obviously Irish and had wandered over to the wrong side of town, sort-of) guy holding a can of Bavaria in one hand, swaying from side to side and saying ‘one-two, one-two’ into the mic every now and again.

Nonetheless, it was really heartening to see the space that used to be Road used in some sort of creative way. Anyone know anything else about it?

UPDATE: The R.A.G.E. is on Facebook here.

I haven’t been in yet but Cormac picked up a few old REM records and was very impressed by their 2nd hand vinyl section – he also got me a bag saying ‘I ♥ vinyl’ which was pretty awesome! I hope they do well as it’s a tough time to open a record store. Fair play to them for putting on free live music too!

Absolutely, Aoife – and yeah, the vinyl section looked well-stocked and reasonably priced. I’ll have to go back and have a proper look instead of a brief nosy soon :)

  3. Was gutted for them to hear of the destruction wreaked on the premises by floods over Xmas. Looked like pretty much all their stock was endangered. Hope they had insurance and are back on their feet soon.

Indeed, Nay, was really sad for them when I heard of the flooding. Best of luck to them.

Hi Lauren, Just letting you know there is another Mixtapes show coming up this Friday 17th June at the R..A.G.E Fade St. It’s the first one since the flooding over Xmas so we’re really excited to have everyone on board. It will be live music from Redsquare and a host of Dublin’s finest MC talent. It’s free in and BYOB too so is an excellent way to kick start the weekend. Doors at 6.55pm sharp and show from 7-9. Cheers, D.
